Become a Science Explorer during GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer program to be held at North Wales Library beginning July 27th.
GlaxosmithKline's Science in the Summer invites students entering 2nd through 6th grade to a fun and free educational experience this summer at North Wales Library, where they will learn about Chemistry. This exciting program features hands-on activities and experiments. GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer classes will run at North Wales Library from July 27-30.
Students must pre-register in person at the Library beginning Monday, May 4th at 1 p.m. Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis.
Students will learn about chemistry in a course designed to intrigue and excite through hands-on experiments. Students will learn what "matter" is and why it is not always the same. They will make crystals and perform experiments with litmus paper to discover if substances are acids or bases. They also will turn pennies into gold and make balloons fly.
Now in its 23rd year, GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer program shows students how science relates to everyday life. The programÕs experiment-oriented courses, which support the Pennsylvania Department of EducationÕs academic standards, take advantage of a child's ability to learn faster through hands-on learning.
The chemistry course at North Wales Library is comprised of two sessions each morning. Level 1 will meet 10-10:45 a.m. Level II will meet 11:15 a.m. - noon. The course will be taught by a certified teacher to groups of 15 students in two age groups: children entering second and third grades (Level 1) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).
As part of the 2009 GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer program, they also provide an annual grant to each participating library to purchase science books. GlaxoSmithKline created the Science in the Summer program to enhance the appreciation of science for Philadelphia area students. This yearÕs class will mark nearly 96,000 students from the Delaware Valley who will have participated since its inception.GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer is sponsored by GSK and administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
