Volunteer Spotlight: Eighty-one is but a number! Behold Bruce Rubin, the age-defying warrior.

Introducing the remarkable 81-year-old Bruce Rubin. This vibrant individual has served on the North Wales Area Library Board and currently dedicates his time as a volunteer at the library.

Bruce leads an active lifestyle, participating in an 80+ basketball team. Their upcoming aspiration is to compete in the 2025 NSGA (National Senior Games Association) in Des Moines, Iowa, and he is even preparing for the 2029 competition. Bruce lives by the mantra: never stop, never give up.

This mantra has carried Bruce through some challenging fights. He faced Stage 3B Breast Cancer, a battle that often leads to despair, but not for Bruce. He confronted the illness head-on and emerged victorious. He attributes his success to maintaining physically fit throughout the arduous journey of battling cancer. I commend everyone who fights against cancer; each person has their own struggles and battles to fight.

Bruce continues to keep an eye on work projects he can pursue, including initiatives aimed at assisting nations that are struggling to feed their populations. He is currently focused on a patented project designed to deliver perishable food to these countries using a cargo-sized refrigeration system run by solar. Imagine the many individuals who could benefit from access to fresh food, clean water, and medicine. At 81, Bruce looks beyond his own needs and recognizes the world's challenges. I understand that maintaining physical and mental activity at the age of 81 is often easier said than done. I aspire to be as agile in both body and mind hopefully when I reach my 80s and beyond. However, Bruce has discovered what truly works for him. He is an extraordinary individual who stays engaged and continually seeks out new challenges. It seems he has taken control of his own destiny, and I hope to do the same.

Best of luck, Bruce, in all your incredible pursuits and your unwavering determination to persevere. And thank you for all that you do at the library!
